This page of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim guide includes the beginning of the main quest "Corner Rat". The main character must meet with Brynjolf and find out where Esbern is hiding.
New main goal: to talk to Brynjolf
Open the world map and you will notice that Riften is located in the southeastern part of Skyrim. If you have already visited the area, then, of course, it is best to use a quick trip. Otherwise, you will have to plan your trip there. A simpler solution is to use a carriage, such as the one in Whiterun's stable. If you want to get to Riften on your own, it's best to start from Ivarsted, heading east and using the road signs along the way.
Regardless of the method you choose, you need to approach the city from the north side. During your first attempt to enter Riften, you will be stopped by Riften Guards. You can either pay to enter the city, or use Speech to convince the guard of your rights or intimidate him. After that, head to the big gate to enter the city.
The person you can ask about Esbern is Brynjolf. During the day you can meet him in the town square, and at night you can find him in the Bee and Barba. Talk to him. If your speech skills are sufficiently developed, you can use persuasion and convince him to point you to Esbern's location. Otherwise, he will ask you for a favor. You will need to steal the ring from Madesi, and then put it in the pocket of a certain Brand-Neck trader. These activities are part of the "Randomness Agreement" quest. Of course, if you've already worked with the Thieves Guild and completed it, you don't have to do anything, and you'll know where to look for Esbern right away.

Brynjolf will share information about Esbern's hideout with you during your first conversation if you have successfully persuaded him, worked with the Thieves Guild, or completed A Chance Arrangement. Curiously, in the latter case, it doesn't matter if you managed to steal and plant the ring or if you were caught by the guards. You can also solve the case in a completely different way by going into hiding without talking to Brynjolf or finding Esbern on your own.
At first, it can be difficult to find the entrance to the sewer system, since it is located on the lower level of the city. Los bonos de bienvenida son el anzuelo principal de cualquier casa.
